The Most Affordable Way to Eat at Disney Parks (Without Going Hungry)

When you think of your ideal Disney vacation, chances are there’s probably a Mickey ice cream bar or some form of character dining involved, but is it still realistic to enjoy those little treats on top of paying for tickets, parking, and other necessities? 🤔 The cost of food might be an overused topic at this point, but it really is an important aspect when planning your Disney vacation, so I wanted to share the most affordable way to eat at Disney parks (without going hungry 😅).

Although this looks like a typical listicle, I recommend reading this as a step-by-step guide so that you can utilize every budget-saving option available and be as strategic about your Disney food planning as possible. And don’t worry, this isn’t going to be one of those B.S. articles that recommends you eat cereal three times a day:

1. Buy Your Groceries Ahead of Time

If you’re bringing your car to Disney World or Disneyland, stop by Costco (or your preferred grocery store) to grab a bag of bagels, cream cheese, and a few snacks to store in your hotel room. Don’t forget the butter knives and plates!

No time to stop at the store? Get your groceries delivered to the hotel lobby via Door Dash, Uber Eats, Target, Walmart, etc. Many guests do this, so the cast members won’t find it out of the ordinary. Many times, these apps offer one-week free trials, so the delivery fee will be waived!

2. Eat Breakfast in Your Hotel Room

Instead of dining out, eat breakfast (like those bagels you just bought) in your hotel room to cut food costs. Chances are, you and your crew will be so eager to get to the parks that you won’t even be concerned about missing a sit-down meal for this one.

3. Grab a Quick Breakfast Pastry

Not staying in a hotel? My favorite easy and cheap park breakfast option when I’m doing a Disneyland day is a sandwich from Starbucks (this is when I like to use my Starbucks points for those freebies). Joffrey’s usually offers some yummy pastries as an alternative option if you’re not a Starbucks fan.

4. Bring Your Snacks

As mentioned above, plan on bringing your snacks to the parks. This will save money, time, and possibly a headache if you’ve got picky eaters in your party. Disney is actually very lenient when it comes to guests bringing in their own food, so as long as you don’t have anything that requires heating up, you’re golden!

*Bonus tip: Disney has lockers at each park where you can store an insulated lunchbox for colder snacks.

5. Use Discounted Disney Gift Cards

Before entering the parks, get a discounted Disney gift card and use that to pay for your meals on the property. You can also use it for souvenirs and even your park tickets! To learn how to save up to 30% on Disney gift cards, see my quick guide here.

6. Get a Refillable Popcorn Bucket

Are you set on getting a Disney-themed snack? I totally get it. Luckily, those cute popcorn buckets you see around the parks aren’t just for looks. They cost about $13-$15 upfront, but you get refills for only $2.25 each for the entire remainder of your stay—not just for that day, but I mean for your entire Disney trip stay!

7. Use Those Discounts!

Cast members will often ask if you’re an Annual Passholder or Magic Keyholder, which gets you 10 – 20% off merch and food, but don’t forget that Disney Vacation Club members, Chase Disney Visa Card holders, and D23 gold members all get discounts, too, so make sure to ask about them.

8. Eat at Quick Service Places

Ready for an actual Disney park meal? Get a yummy and filling meal from one of their quick service places. There are endless options for every person, and I already have a list of meals for under $15 to help you narrow down your choices.

9. Get a Free Water Cup at Quick Service Places

Of course, I always recommend bringing your own water bottle with you, but sometimes we forget things. If that’s the case, don’t buy water at the Disney parks. Ask for a water cup at a quick service place, and they’ll happily give you a large cup you can fill for free.

10. Order the Kids Meal

I’ve always been a grazer, which means that I tend to eat smaller portions at meal times. When I’m allowed to order from the kid’s meal, it’s another easy way to save a buck or two. Not all places at the Disney parks allow this, but many do, so use it to your advantage if you’ve got a smaller tummy.

11. Take Advantage of Free Toddler Meals

If your child is three years or younger, not only will they get into the parks for free, but they’ll also be able to dine at the buffets for free! This is a good chance to try out character dining buffets, where you’ll get a delicious meal combined with the Disney entertainment experience.

12. Get a Sip and Savor Pass

This only applies to food festivals, but they’re pretty common at Disney parks. If you happen to be there during one, you can get a Sip and Savor Pass, which enables you to try a variety of dishes at a discounted rate. Plus, they often give you the option of joining a scavenger hunt, where the final prize usually involves a free dessert.

13. Consider the Free Disney Dining Plan

Disney is currently offering a free dining plan to guests who purchase a non-discounted 4-night, 4-day Walt Disney Travel Company package, which includes both meals and snacks. I go more into detail about whether or not their free dining plan offers really save you money in the long run here, but basically, it seems like the way to go if you have a larger family (5+ members), so if that’s the case, definitely look into it.

14. Eat Elsewhere

I know this blog post is supposed to be about eating at Disney parks, but if you’re at Disneyland, there’s a selection of affordable dining spots right across the street.

While I’m not the biggest fast food fan, I understand that sometimes it is the most convenient option while traveling and attempting to stick to a budget. I’ve only ever eaten at Denny’s and McDonald’s across the street from Disneyland, but both were decked out in Disney decor, so you’ll still experience a bit of the magic if you choose to have a meal there.
