15 Free Disney Activities for Budget-Friendly Fun
Hello, dear readers! Chances are, you’ve been avoiding the news lately (or if you’re like me, you aim to avoid it altogether regardless of what year it is) because all we hear about these days is how crappy the economy is. Between the stock market, rising food costs, etc., it’s enough to make a person want to go into full Y2K-end-of-the-world-disaster prep mode 😵💫, so today, I wanted to share 15 FREE Disney activities for budget-friendly fun.
Now, hopefully, I’m just being overly cautious here, but, as people begin reevaluating their spending habits to help them get through what seems like an inevitable recession, I know we’ll all want more entertainment options that won’t cost us too much money. This may not solve all of our issues, but I sincerely hope these activities will serve as a comforting distraction in the meantime ❤️
1. Host Disney-Themed Dinners On the Patio
Dining al fresco always makes a meal more enjoyable, and you know what’s even better? Making it a fun-themed meal! For example, October 11th is officially cornbread and chili night at my house, and I always finish it off with Oreos dipped in peanut butter for dessert (and a viewing of The Parent Trap right before bed, of course).

2. Watch a Park Fireworks Show
Remember, park fireworks shows can be viewed from Downtown Disney and Disney hotels, so theme park admission is technically not required. Find a cozy spot to sit around 9 pm and enjoy the view. Not in Anaheim or Orlando? Watch them for free here.
3. Setup a Home Theater and Enjoy a Disney Movie Night
Watching a Disney movie is probably an obvious one but hear me out! We’re in the process of turning my spare guest room into a home theater, and while you don’t necessarily need to go out and buy a projector, turning off the lights and making a big bowl of buttery popcorn can turn a typical couch-rotting session into a special Disney movie night at home.
4. Participate in a Virtual Disney Art Class
I love to draw, but sadly, I do not make enough time for it. Following along with virtual lessons helps me set aside time to practice. You can learn how to draw your favorite Disney characters for free here.
5. Listen to Your Favorite Disney Music or Podcast
One of my favorite ways to take a break during the workday is to go for a walk and catch up on my podcasts (I listen to WAY too many episodic podcasts, but that’s another conversation for another day).
My top two favorite shows happen to be Disney-related: Magical Rewind, which reviews every made-for-TV Disney movie, and Pod Meets World (a Boy Meets World rewatch podcast that dives deeper into the different aspects of the entertainment industry).

6. Visit Disney Springs or Downtown Disney
Disney Springs and Downtown Disney are free to walk through if you’re in Anaheim or Orlando. Both feature places such as the Art of Disney, pin trading booths, Disney-themed sweets shops, etc., making for a pleasant little window-shopping experience.
7. Make Your Favorite Park Treats at Home
Whether you enjoy Dole Whips or the curry-flavored popcorn from Tokyo Disney, taking the time to slow down and make your favorite treats at home is always a great pastime. My personal favorite is Grey Stuff, and the recipe is practically idiot-proof.

8. Walk Along the Disney Boardwalk
If you can make it to the Disney Boardwalk, you can see the street vendors, watch the friendship boats, and play many carnival-style games (though they do cost a small fee).
9. Have a Disney-Themed Game Night
Board game nights are such a fun way to connect with your friends and family without breaking the bank. Of course, you can play whatever games you want, but I personally love my Pixar-themed Monopoly game and testing my knowledge with the Magical World of Disney Trivia game (which is way more challenging than I expected).

10. Use the Play Disney App
The Play Disney app can be used to interact with the different aspects of the Disney parks, but it also has fun trivia games and an “at-home” feature that can keep you distracted for hours.
11. Take a Tour of the Disney Resort Hotels
Contrary to what one might think, you don’t need a reservation to browse the Disney resort hotels. Before Disneyland eventually re-opened after the COVID shutdown, I’d occasionally walk around the lobby of the Disneyland hotel and look at the gallery they had on display to get my magical “fix.”
12. Build a Disney Lego Set
This requires owning a Lego set, but it’s not a bad time to break it out and start building if you have one lying around.
13. Put a Puzzle Together
A cheap alternative to Legos (but still just as fun) would be a Disney puzzle set. I’ve been slowly working on a Thomas Kinkade Alice in Wonderland set and will work through a few others once I’m done.
14. Watch a Disney Sing Along
Singing is another one of my favorite hobbies, so naturally, I enjoy turning on one of the sing-alongs on Disney Plus while I work through my household chores like Miss Snow White. I would recommend it 10/10!
15. Workout to Mousercise!
I’m probably dating myself with this one, but if you’re looking for an entertaining way to get your daily workout in, you can watch the Mousercise series for free on YouTube. Yes, it’s a corny cringe-fest, but it’s also a good way to pass the time while doing something beneficial for your bod!
